Officer Training

Sixteen officers participated in the Officer Training session on Friday, October 8th. During the training, students were involved in activities to help them determine their leadership strengths and personality types.

Protect The Egg: Officers broke into two groups, morning officers and afternoon officers. They were given an egg, 2 drink straws, a piece of newspaper, and an arm length of tape. (Far left) As a team, they developed a protective device that would be able to protect the egg when dropped from a substantial height. (Near left)

Perhaps age and experience does count for something.....the afternoon officers (left) were successful protecting their egg.

The morning officers...well, their egg was not quite protected! (right) Nice try, though.

For lunch, the officers were treated to a roast beef luncheon prepared by the Food Service students. They were joined by Mr. Donovan (Director) and Mr. Livermore (Assistant Director). It was the first official event for the newly renovated school restaurant. Lunch was delicious!

Other workshops included, SkillsUSA Knowledge. Officers were introduced to the meaning of the SkillsUSA Emblem, the Opening Ceremony, The Program of Work, the and meaning of the Pledge. Mr. Livermore addressed the importance of being a role model and what it means to be an officer for SkillsUSA.

Officers were introduced to Parliamentary Procedure and ran two meetings.

Mr. Nick Scott, Jr. of Scott Enterprises, was our keynote speaker. He stressed the importance of doing things the right way, ethically, and how important it was for a leader to listen.

Rotary Outstanding Vocational Awards - ROVA

The ninth annual ROVA Leadership Camp was held at McKeever Learning Center in Sandy Lake on March 6th and 7th. Three local Rotary Clubs (Linesville, Meadville AM and Meadville PM) generously sponsored five students. These five students were chosen because they exhibited leadership qualities. While attending the camp, students honed those qualities.

Left - Chris Frost, p.m. President, and Commercial Art student from Saegertown, participates in the "Ameoba", an exercise promoting good communication skills. Participants are blindfolded and link hands in a circle. The leader stands in the center and "moves" the "ameoba" by communicating to each person. "Go straight" will not work in this game!
Right - Cortney Coppock, a Cosmetology student from Conneaut Valley helps teammates through the "Electric Spiderweb". Through teamwork, students had to decide which "hole" to get fellow teammates through to the other side. Teamwork and trust were learned in this excerise.

Left - James Rice, an Electrical Occupations student, from Cambridge Springs, leades his team in the "Railroad Tie Skis". Teams competed to move together quickly to the finish line....not as easy as you would think. They had to work together; ususally a leader started a rhythm. Good job James! Right - Clete Gongas, a Carpentry student from Linesville, suggests a solution to a problem presented to the team. Far Right - Karlee Green, a Health Occupations student from Conneaut Lake and Clete Gongas work as a team changing the order of their team on the balance beam. Students had to reverse their order without falling off. It took communications, problem solving, teamwork and trust to get the job done.
The Rotary promotes Community Service in a very similar way as SkillsUSA, so it as natural partnership. District 7280 is the only Rotary District which holds a leadership training camp for Vocational Technical students. District Govenor, Chris R. Fiely will be promoting ROVA at the International Convention in New Orleans. For more information on the Rotary, click here.
