Career Camp Information


About



Career Camp is an opportunity for students entering 7th-8th grades to explore different careers. They had the option of concentrating on a single area of study to complete the group project or rotate between different camps.

Career Types


There were many different career types available to the participating students to explore and learn more about. These are a sampling of the different types of careers available to the students.
  • Auto Body 1/8" Scale - Students participating in this program see some of the skills performed on die-cast models. They also learn about auto finishes, surface prep, spray-gun operations, safety tools, and basic masking.
  • Building/Construction - Students learn about measuring, some supervised cutting, using a scroll saw, and project assembly. Students also build a small wooden box.
  • Cosmetology - Students in this program learn two important aspects of cosmetology: hair styling and manicures. Students learn how to perform hairstyles on a mannequin and learn how to perform the perfect manicure.
  • Culinary Arts - Students in this program learned how to make an apple pie from scratch.
  • Drafting Design/CAD - Students learned how to construct a drawing with AUTOCAD 2007 software. This camp used state-of-the-art computer aided drafting software packages in today's industry. This is an ideal camp for students interested in the world of engineering.
  • Electrical Wiring - Students learned about basic electrical circuitry/wiring and electrical polarity. They woudl develop skills in electrical safety and basic wire circuits, including single pole switch, three way circuit, duplex receptacle, and door bell.
  • First Aid/Health Careers - Students learned how to use basic medical equipment and the various careers that the health field has to offer.
  • Horticulture - Students learned how to garden for wildlife habitats in order to attract various species of birds and butterflies. They learned how to design a garden with various types of butterfly bushes, milkweed, annuals, and perennials. They also learned how to build a butterfly cage or a butterfly house, and also how to construct a garden walkway with hypertufa rocks. The students created their own hyperfula rock to take home with them.
  • Law Enforcement - Students learned about the various operations of a crime scene investigator, such as lifting fingerprint samples and photographing the scene. They learn various techniques in order to solve the case.
  • Marketing - Students learned about advertising and the different methods of it, such as radio, television, magazine, and newspaper. They also learned why the advertisers use devices such as logos, slogans, imaginary characters, and jingles in order to help sell a product. They had the opportunity to create their own product and make an advertisement starring themselves.
  • Tool & Die - Students went to PMI and learned about the use of robotics for manufacturing applications. They were instructed in robotic operations and standards, and learned how to assemble and program robots in order to do basic tasks. They also went on a tour of local manufacturing plants to see robotic cells being used in the industry.
  • Web Page Designer - Students learned how to create their own webpage with basic computer programs, and learned tips on how to create and design a site that would be visually attractive and content-rich.
